From the UK, more fodder for the debate over the US drone assassination campaign and the acceptability of killing citizens: In early February, a leaked white paper from the Obama Justice Department caused a small stir, because it laid out an expansive set of circumstances under which the president could order a citizen killed abroad. In September 2011, the US killed Al Qaeda propagandist Anwar al-Awlaki and Samir Khan, both US citizens, and a few weeks later a US drone strike in Yemen also killed Awlaki's 16-year-old son, Abdulrahman.Read more »
Cody Wilson, like many Texan gunsmiths, is fast-talkin’ and fast-shootin’—but unlike his predecessors in the Lone Star State, he’s got 3D printing to help him with his craft. Wilson’s nonprofit organization, Defense Distributed, released a video this week showing a gun firing off over 600 rounds—illustrating what is likely to be the first wave of semi-automatic and automatic weapons produced by the additive manufacturing process. Last year, his group famously demonstrated that it could use a 3D-printed “lower” for an AR-15—but the gun failed after six rounds.Read more »

I approached the security checkpoint at the San Jose airport, sent all my personal property into the black hole of the x-ray conveyor belt and looked around for an opt-out line, but I didn’t see one. I asked a friendly TSA agent (we’ll call him “Tiny”) where the opt-out line was and he said, “You’re in the opt-out line.”
Confused I asked, ”Isn’t this the body scanner line?” and Agent Tiny told me, “Just step through the backscatter machine and they’ll screen you on the other side.”Read more »
Not to be outdone by their Missouri comrades, the Democrats in Minnesota have introduced their own gun confiscation bill, HF 241 (Minnesota was actually first I believe). This bill would basically outlaw anything other than a revolver, bolt action rifle, or musket with its all inclusive list of what constitutes an "assault weapon". Is the Federal government watching this closely to see how it pans out? Click on the link to the official MN bill in the article and read what is going to be banned.Read more »

Today, we live in a world of the progressives’ creation, somewhere halfway between socialism and liberty. It is a volatile mixture. It is a world increasingly ruled by force; force wielded by a powerfully armed government. Whether it is the force of the income tax, the force of compulsory education, the force of regulation, or the force of law enforcement the effects are clear to all willing to see: a society becoming sicker and more aggressive.Read more »

The civil right achievements of Martin Luther King are quite justly the focus of the annual birthday commemoration of his legacy. But it is remarkable, as I've noted before on this holiday, how completely his vehement anti-war advocacy is ignored when commemorating his life (just as his economic views are). By King's own description, his work against US violence and militarism, not only in Vietnam but generally, was central - indispensable - to his worldview and activism, yet it has been almost completely erased from how he is remembered.Read more »
