ALEC: Corporations Funding Legislation and Intellectual Property

http://www.americanlegislator.org

I have been reading up on the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC), a legislation powerhouse responsible for laws such as the Voter ID legislation that we are dealing with here in PA. They claim to be proponents of the free market, federalism, and limited government, but this whole group is just really creeping me out. Seems to support of transition of power, rather than a lessening of regulation. And then I saw this article supporting intellectual property rights.

Debate with 3rd-Party Candidates Jill Stein, Virgil Goode, R. Anderson

http://www.democracynow.org

President Obama and Republican challenger Mitt Romney sparred last night in their second of three debates. Today, in a two-hour special, we expand the debate by including the voices of three presidential candidates shut out of the official debate. We are joined by Jill Stein of the Green Party, Constitution Party nominee Virgil Goode, and Justice Party candidate Rocky Anderson. We re-air parts of last night’s presidential debate, pausing the videotape to give third-party candidates a chance to respond to the same questions put to the major-party candidates.

Paleo Diet Lawsuit Dismissed By Court in Blow to Free Expression

http://reason.com

Bad news in an important Institute for Justice-launched lawsuit defending the right of free speech on the Internet about matters of diet and nutrition. A state licensing board in North Carolina tried to suppress a blogger who talked up and advised people on the health benefits of the "paleo" diet (that is, eating as we think cavement ate, no grains or processed foods), telling him directly what he could or could not say about his belief that the high-meat, low-carb diet helped him with his diabetes. The case was dismissed by a federal court late last week.

Kate's breasts, Pussy Riot, virginity tests & our attitude on women...

http://www.cnn.com

It seems as if we are in a time of unprecedented struggle over the meaning of women's bodies and sexuality. Controversy is swirling about an American University professor who breast-fed a baby in class; topless photos of Kate Middleton have been released; and a Time magazine cover showing a mother breast-feeding her toddler sparked even more tittering in May. It is not just the breast that is contested: Pussy Riot, the punk band, was sentenced to two years in a Russian prison after a staged performance in which they did high kicks that showed too much of their bodies.

Airline Refuses to Board Teen With Down Syndrome...

http://laist.com

American Airlines allegedly did not permit a teenaged boy with Down Syndrome board a flight from Newark, New Jersey to Los Angeles this weekend, and his parents believe it was because of discrimination.

16-year-old Bede Vanderhorst was booked with a first-class ticket on flight with his family Sunday to LAX, but the airline labeled the teen a "flight risk" at the gate, claiming his behavior was erratic, according to KTLA.

Banned in the UK! BBC fights for right to air riot docudrama

http://www.rt.com

The BBC is considering making an appeal against a court order which stopped it from broadcasting a dramatized film on last year’s riots in London. The film, which features actors portraying anonymous rioters sharing their experience of the events, was due to be broadcast on Monday evening, but was banned by a court order hours before hitting the airwaves. Its script was written by award-winning playwright Alecky Blythe and is based on interviews from some 270 people conducted by the Guardian and London School of Economics as part of a study into the massive public disorder.

‘Not every opinion is valid’: Free speech wall torn down

http://news.nationalpost.com

I think that this story speaks for itself, but this is another story highlighting an attack against free speech at Universities. I recently graduated from Carleton University and I wish I could say that these kind of events were rare. This piece has many priceless quotes including “Only someone who had gone to university could write something so utterly stupid,” referring to the public explanation given by the individual who tore down the free speech wall.

Much more in the news article itself, but you have to read it to believe it.

Bondage club can use school logo, but legalization group can't

http://www.desmoinesregister.com

University administrators met Thursday with NORML ISU, the campus chapter of the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws, about the use of the school’s mascot on their club shirts. The T-shirts say NORML ISU on the front, with Cy’s head in place of the “O.” On the back is the slogan “Freedom is Norml at ISU” and a marijuana leaf. Now, Montgomery said, the group feels unfairly targeted, because other clubs on campus can still use Cy, with university approval.

Woman Says TSA Agent Stole Her Jewelry

http://boston.cbslocal.com

Terri Ivester says, “The TSA agent holds my backpack up, and um, says there’s a water bottle in this backpack, I’m going to have to take that.”

That’s when Ivester says the agent left the area with her bag.

George Nacara, who is head of the TSA at Logan, tells the I-Team that passengers have the right to stay with their bags.

Ivester says she continued through the security checkpoint and she never gave it another thought until she got dressed for the christening.

“I’m ready to put on my jewelry and I can’t find it,” she says.

Amish leader, 15 followers convicted of hate crimes in beard attacks

http://news.blogs.cnn.com

Sixteen members of a breakaway Amish community in rural eastern Ohio, including its leader, were convicted of federal hate crimes Thursday for the forcible cutting of Amish men's beards and Amish women's hair. Sam Mullet Sr. and the 15 followers were found guilty of conspiracy to violate federal hate-crime law in connection with what authorities said were the religiously motivated attacks on several fellow Amish people last year. The verdicts were read in U.S. District Court in Cleveland following several days of jury deliberation and a trial that began in late August, a U.S.
