Read more »The Wall Street Journal report calls the Turkish gold payments a “loophole in Western sanctions” which ban Iran from receiving payments in US dollars, but it’s far more than that. A “loophole” at least operates within the framework of the policy. Abandoning the US dollar to circumvent the entire policy is a thumb in the eye to US legitimacy, and the global banking system.

A Bitcoin transaction services company says that hackers broke into one of its brokerage accounts last week, nabbing more than $12,000 worth of the digital currency. That attack knocked Bitinstant offline over the weekend. The company says that while it lost Bitcoins, no customers were affected by the hack.The criminals were able to take control of Bitinstant’s internet domains by convincing its domain registrar, Site5, to hand over control of the company’s Domain Name Service.

WinPoker.com, on the iPoker network, is adding Bitcoin support for deposits and withdrawals, pokerfuse can exclusively reveal. It is the first time a poker room on any major online poker network has added first-class Bitcoin support to the cashier. Deposits can be made by sending BTC directly through the cashier on the WinPoker website to the room’s Bitcoin wallet. As soon as the system receives the funds—typically within ten minutes—the money will be credited to the player’s account. If players store their wallets on smartphones, depositing can be as simple as scanning a QR code.

An armored trucked crashed along Interstate 81 and spilled out its cargo of $10 million in silver bars. I thought those armored bank trucks were made of sterner stuff, but carrying that much weight, I guess it’s more likely the silver broke out than the crash broke in. I bet a truck carrying $10 million in paper would have been just fine.It’s a pretty good metaphor. If you think of the controlled economy as an armored truck, when this thing crashes paper money crashes with it, but silver breaks free. It has economic momentum.

A gallon of regular gas was $5.69 Thursday in Calabasas, while a gallon of super costs $5.89 with cash and $5.99 with credit. Such prices are causing pain at the pump for many drivers who might see an 11-cent increase by later this morning, which means some could be paying more than $6 a gallon.
