In autumn 2001, America’s initial purpose in Afghanistan—which made perfect sense—was to destroy or incapacitate al Qaeda and punish the Taliban government that hosted it. This was accomplished 11 years ago. Today, the purpose of the U.S. mission is ill-defined, but clearly involves nation building. What the coalition desperately needs is an achievable, realistic endgame, not an indefinite timeline that commits thousands of U.S. troops to Afghanistan until or beyond 2024.

University administrators met Thursday with NORML ISU, the campus chapter of the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws, about the use of the school’s mascot on their club shirts. The T-shirts say NORML ISU on the front, with Cy’s head in place of the “O.” On the back is the slogan “Freedom is Norml at ISU” and a marijuana leaf. Now, Montgomery said, the group feels unfairly targeted, because other clubs on campus can still use Cy, with university approval.

The Daily Telegraph reports that bestiality laws have been off the books in Germany since 1969, but Agriculture Minister Ilse Aigner has agreed to support a law that would make it illegal for people to "use (animals) for their own sexual activities or sexual acts of third parties." Her mother, a long time advocate for medical use of the illegal drug, has been giving her a gram of oral cannabis oil every day. Despite the fact that medical marijuana is legal in Oregon, where Comstock lives, the idea of giving it to a child still gives pause to many adults who associate the drug with recreational use that breaks the law.

Joshua Messier had a good life that was turned upside down by the onset of schizophrenia, then ended at the age of 23 at the hands of correction officers at Bridgewater State Hospital. The hospital is run by the state prison system, and is home to the most violent mentally ill people in Massachusetts.
Officers while restraining Josh, suffocated him literally to his death. His death certificate says cause of death, is "cardiopulmonary arrest during physical restraint". The manner of death is ruled a homicide. The officers involved have been cleared of any wrongdoing.

The auction is full of amusing (or terrifying, depending on how you view it) little tidbits, such as how, in the product description, the seller claims the planet was given to him by God, so it’s now his to auction, then asks bidders to consult the shipping method. The item description also says that the seller requires bidders to give him a letter of purchase intent so he knows the bidders are serious about purchasing the item.

DOT (Department of Transportation) a.k.a. truck police, are the armed tax collectors who specifically harass tuckers, landscapers and basically any one who may drive in a "commercial looking truck". I avoid DOT when ever I can, because even if everything goes well it is going to be an hour or 2 with the truck inspection.

Terri Ivester says, “The TSA agent holds my backpack up, and um, says there’s a water bottle in this backpack, I’m going to have to take that.”
That’s when Ivester says the agent left the area with her bag.
George Nacara, who is head of the TSA at Logan, tells the I-Team that passengers have the right to stay with their bags.
Ivester says she continued through the security checkpoint and she never gave it another thought until she got dressed for the christening.
“I’m ready to put on my jewelry and I can’t find it,” she says.

The new documentary, "Long Distance Revolutionary: A Journey with Mumia Abu-Jamal," chronicles Abu-Jamal’s life and work as a journalist, writer and public intellectual, even as he spent some 30 years on death row in Pennsylvania. In 1982, Abu-Jamal was sentenced to die for allegedly killing Philadelphia police officer Daniel Faulkner. He has always maintained his innocence. Then, last year, the 3rd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals set aside Abu-Jamal’s death sentence after finding jurors were given confusing instructions that encouraged them to choose death rather than a life sentence.

During Thursday night's vice presidential debate, Vice President Joe Biden attacked Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) for criticizing the president's stimulus act despite having sent two separate requests for stimulus funds for his district. Biden was wrong. Ryan sent at least four requests. A Freedom of Information Act request for correspondence between Ryan's office and the Environmental Protection Agency, filed by The Huffington Post, unearthed two additional instances in which the Wisconsin Republican petitioned for American Recovery Act funds.
