DHS Shuts Down Dwolla Payments to and From Mt. Gox

The Department of Homeland Security appears to have shut down the ability to use Dwolla, a mobile payment service, to withdraw and deposit money into Mt. Gox, a Bitcoin trading platform. A Dwolla representative confirmed the move to Betabeat. Chris Coyne, cofounder of OKCupid, posted a screenshot of an email he received from Dwolla, stating that due to recent orders from the Department of Homeland Security, Dwolla cannot complete the bank transfer to Mt. Gox.

NH city suing ‘Robin Hood’ for paying parking meters of strangers

The city of Keene, N.H., is suing “Robin Hood and his Merry Men” — a group that has made a name for itself by paying people’s parking meters before they can get slapped with a ticket from local parking enforcement officers. The Union Leader reported Tuesday that six “Robin Hooders” troll the streets of the city’s quaint downtown in search of cars parked at expired meters.

Feds spend over $400,000 on underwear that senses cigarette smoke

The National Institutes of Health (NIH), an agency of the United States Department of Health and Human Services, has granted more than $400,000 to a research project that involves something unconventional. The University of Alabama has received two grants from NIH that total $402,721 to create a monitoring system involving underwear that can detect when a person smokes cigarettes. So far, the project has produced a “very early prototype” of the monitoring system. The current prototype fits like a vest.
