Russian scientists are falling victim to their own antiquated notions of socialized, government-run science as Moscow demands that all its science arms be further unified under new rules and authority. It's amazing to see the double-think from the scientists as they try to explain government sponsorship of science as a good thing, but in the same breath explain away further centralization and new government mandates as a bad thing. From a libertarian perspective, this reads almost like an article from The Onion.

"Riot in Russia!" they screamed, before taunting Prime Minister Vladimir Putin and urging Russians to hit the streets in protest. The band, Pussy Riot, has been gaining Internet notoriety after their January 20 gig of sorts, the latest in a string of impromptu performances to protest Putin's candidacy for the presidency.

Russia has taken an unfortunate step into its police-state past with a new law that grants the state's security service broad powers to jail people simply on suspicion that they may be about to engage in illegal activity.

The FSB has now regained a power that its feared predecessor agency, the KGB, had under the Soviet Union. This has been a consistent pattern under Vladimir Putin, who, first as president, then as prime minister, has steadily restored the power and prestige of the security agencies, at the expense, many say, of Russia's fragile democracy.
