Secession! Lakota Sioux Nation Leaves The Union!

http://www.sodahead.com

President Barack Obama has an unexpected foreign policy problem – in
the Western United States. The Lakota Sioux nation has seceded from the
United States, according to a story on the anti-American website La Voz de Aztlan.

“We are no longer citizens of the United States of America and all
those who live in the five-state area that encompasses our country are

The Case for Abolishing Patents (Yes, All of Them) - The Atlantic

http://www.theatlantic.com

Our patent system is a mess. It's a fount of expensive litigation that allows aging companies to linger around by bullying their more innovative competitors in court. Critics have suggested plenty of reasonable reforms, from eliminating software patents to clamping down on "trolls" who buy up patent portfolios only so they can file lawsuits. But do we need a more radical solution? Would we be possibly be better off without any patents at all?

Kate's breasts, Pussy Riot, virginity tests & our attitude on women...

http://www.cnn.com

It seems as if we are in a time of unprecedented struggle over the meaning of women's bodies and sexuality. Controversy is swirling about an American University professor who breast-fed a baby in class; topless photos of Kate Middleton have been released; and a Time magazine cover showing a mother breast-feeding her toddler sparked even more tittering in May. It is not just the breast that is contested: Pussy Riot, the punk band, was sentenced to two years in a Russian prison after a staged performance in which they did high kicks that showed too much of their bodies.

Stepdad confined teen for years, sent him away on bus

http://news.blogs.cnn.com

A gaunt 18-year-old Georgia man told California police his stepfather had banished him and sent him on a cross-country bus ride after the stepfather had confined him to a room for four years, authorities said. The confinement allegedly was so thorough, Mitch Comer's two younger sisters – living in the same home – hadn't seen the teen for the last two years. The teen's stepfather and mother were arrested in Dallas, Georgia, last week after a retired Los Angeles police officer found the teen wandering an L.A.

Minn. jury begins deliberating raw milk case

http://www.dglobe.com

A Minnesota man accused of violating the state's raw milk laws was just the middle man in a voluntary arrangement of people sharing food, his attorney argued Wednesday.

Alvin Schlangen, an organic egg producer in central Minnesota, is charged with three misdemeanor counts including distributing unpasteurized milk, operating without a food handler's license and handling adulterated food. Minnesota law prohibits raw milk sales except directly to consumers on the farm when it's produced.

Philly threatens to sue man for cleaning up vacant lot

http://articles.philly.com

THE CITY-OWNED lot, neighbors say, was in deplorable shape, thick with weeds and trash. So when a business owner cleaned it up last month, spending more than $20,000 and removing, by his count, more than 40 tons of debris, Point Breeze residents went out of their way to pass 20th and Annin streets to see the changes. "This was a lot of garbage," Elaine McGrath said as she took in the carefully tended plantings and wooden benches. "Now it's gorgeous. I'm excited." But not everyone is happy with the alterations - namely, the lot's owner, the Philadelphia Redevelopment Authority.

Walter Samaszko Jr, 69, died at his home in Carson City, Nev., with $200 in a bank account, but as officials later discovered, he had about $7 million stored neatly around his home. According to the coroner, Samaszko had been dead for at least a month, dying of heart problems. Cleanup crews found boxes of gold in the garage, at which point, "we took the house apart,” said Carson City clerk-recorder Alan Glover.
