Neighbors rally to gardener's side following anonymous complaint

Michael Martin is used to getting compliments on the botanical bonanza he has cultivated, mulched and pampered along his leafy, residential lot on the Near West Side.

But one anonymous complaint set Madison's inspection apparatus in motion and kept Martin in thrall for two weeks, an experience that mustered supportive neighbors.

"I know the city has to respond, and all this is complaint-driven, but they don't have to act on it," she said. "Too many people can use that as a way to get back at their neighbor. One anonymous complaint can be very manipulative."

A woman fighting a terminal form of bone cancer is trying to raise money to help pay bills with a few weekend garage sales, but the city of Salem says she’s breaking the law and is shutting her down.

Jan Cline had no idea, but the city of Salem has a clear law that states a person can only have three yard sales a year.

More than 75 people visited Chicago Police headquarters Monday to pick up applications to register firearms on the day the city's new handgun ordinance took effect. The ordinance, which requires gun owners to keep their weapons in their homes, was hastily crafted by the city after the U.S. Supreme Court struck down the city's 28-year-old handgun ban....

San Francisco considers banning sale of pets except fish

Sell a guinea pig, go to jail.... That's the law under consideration by San Francisco's Commission of Animal Control and Welfare. If the commission approves the ordinance, San Francisco could soon have what is believed to be the country's first ban on the sale of all pets except fish.

PA Mayor calls for anti-sticker ordinance; calls stickers "graffiti"

We have a thriving music scene here in Lancaster, and many of the stickers are promotional pieces for rock and rap musicians.... some underground political stuff as well. I wonder if an "anti-sticker" ordinance would also apply to political campaign stickers of the mayor or party involved in trying to push this through? Just sayin'.....
