When the pilgrims first came to America they almost all starved to death because they adopted communal agriculture. How the pilgrims saved themselves was to adopt the primary prerequisite for a capitalism economy, private property. Mayflower pilgrims had a system in which all goods were owned by the community. All produce was in a common store, from which each individual would receive equal ration regardless of how much he had contributed. Ward Bird is in prison for 3-6 six years because a trespasser on his property refused to leave and he had a gun. The stories conflict as to what role the gun played. In any case no shot was fired. I have not seen the details of the incident but suspect Ward is guilty of 'talking to police'. Note in this report that he refused to take a plea deal.Read more »
News of a home burning down in rural Obion County, Tennessee because the neighboring fire department refused assistance to the owners who hadn’t paid the $75 fee for the coverage, has spread like, well, wildfire.
But like most news articles - you've really got to read the whole thing. The unpaid $75 fee was something the homeowners could have chosen to pay or not pay - and they chose not to pay. It was expanded service offerings from a neighboring city to the more rural area.
