CA City May Take Fees & % of Revenue from Outdoor Fitness Trainers

Fitness classes in Santa Monica parks have other park users are complaining about fitness enthusiasts not only blocking pedestrian walkways but also making too much noise. So the City Council is considering requiring that fitness trainers pay an annual $100 fee and turn over 15 percent of their gross revenues to the city, as well as requiring CPR training, insurance, and limiting class size; notwithstanding that trainers already pay the city for business licenses and for police-issued permits.

Condoms In Porn In Los Angeles Will Now Be Mandated On Set

Despite strong outcry against it from the adult film industry, a measure requiring porn performers to wear condoms on set was passed by LA County voters, with 56% of the vote. The "Safer Sex in the Adult Film Industry Act'," in addition to mandating condoms, will require porn producers to apply for a permit from the LA County Dept of Public Health to shoot sex scenes. The fee will finance periodic inspections of porn filming, and violations will be subject to civil fines and criminal misdemeanor charges. 1.2 million people thought this was a good idea.

SAT Reading, Writing Levels Fall to Lowest Levels in 40 Years

From the "when all else fails, lower your standards" department: Average reading and writing SAT scores for high school students declined to their lowest levels (dropping 1 point to 496, while math remained the same at 514). The article does note that more lower-income students with less access to high-quality education are taking the test, possibly providing an explanation for the lower test scores.
