I wish I could say that I couldn't believe this when I read it. The prospect of animal rights groups forming their own police forces and getting an armed gang to do warrant-less search and seizures on their behalf is pretty endemic of the police state.

Jurors to be told not to tweet under new law

Gov. Jerry Brown signed legislation Friday requiring trial judges to tell jurors that existing bans on conducting their own research about the case, or talking to outsiders about it, applies to electronic and wireless communication. Violations by jury members will be punishable by up to six months in jail for criminal contempt.

New federal license law could kill the family farm

The new law would require anyone who drives a tractor to get a Commercial Drivers License. If a CDL was required the cost for food will increase dramatically. During times such as harvest farmers need to work long hours to get crops harvested before they spoil in the fields. CDL requirement would reduce the labor pool since the minimum age for a CDL is 21.

Swedish man caught trying to split atoms at home

A Swedish man who was arrested after trying to split atoms in his kitchen said Wednesday he was only doing it as a hobby. The 31-year-old Handl said he had tried for months to set up a nuclear reactor at home and kept a blog about his experiments, describing how he created a small meltdown on his stove. Only later did he realize it might not be legal and sent a question to Sweden's Radiation Authority, which answered by sending the police.

Family lives in storage unit, CPS takes kids

The northeast Houston storage unit that the Leonards call home has 10,000 square feet—plenty of room for the parents and their six kids to roam around. It has air conditioning, beds, a bath tub, a microwave oven and two computers--among other amenities. But it lacks running water. And partly on that basis, CPS has taken custody of the couple's offspring.

On "Independence" Day, Over Half of Cities in LA Ban Fireworks

In L.A. County, 49 cities and all unincorporated areas ban fireworks. Thirty-nine cities permit safe-and-sane devices -- those that do not explode or fly. THE STATE FIRE MARSHAL DETERMINES WHICH FIREWORKS ARE CONSIDERED "SAFE-AND-SANE," and they are labeled with a state seal.
Several cities throughout Southern California are hosting fireworks displays this July 4 weekend as authorities remind residents about Los Angeles County's "safe-and-sane" fireworks ban.

Official Calls for 13 Counties To Secede From California

Riverside County Supervisor Jeff Stone apparently thinks so, after proposing that the county lead a campaign for as many as 13 Southern California counties to secede from the state.Stone said in a statement late Thursday that Riverside, Imperial, San Diego, Orange, San Bernardino, Kings, Kern, Fresno, Tulare, Inyo, Madera, Mariposa and Mono counties should form the new state of South California.
