"You’re young, you’ve got your whole life ahead of you, you’re zealous for liberty, and in some capacity or another you want to spend your life in the meaningful pursuit of a better world. What do you do with your life? In this article I’m going to argue that if your goal is liberty, electoral politics is the last path you should consider. Then I will suggest a far more exciting, fulfilling, enriching, and – most importantly – effective path to a better, freer world".Read more »

A shopkeeper at a jewelry store turned the tables on two armed robbers. One suspect is hospitalized and in critical condition following the attempted robbery. Two men, one in a wheelchair, came to the Tick Tock jewelry store and allegedly ordered people down on the ground and pointed guns at customers. As a resident of the most Catholic state in the nation (Massachusetts), I have watched for more than a decade as the Roman Catholic Church responded to charges of priestly pedophilia with a troubling combination of procrastination and obfuscation. Far too often, Catholic priests, bishops and cardinals have identified not with abused children but with their “band of brothers,” their fellow priests. In the case of the sex crimes committed by former assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky, officials at Penn State also looked the other way.Read more »
Since the dawn of Modernism and the Socialist Era, the western world has experienced a kind of cultural inflation. We have more money than ever, but less purchasing power. We have more laws than ever, but less justice. We have more music than ever, but less harmony. We have more books than ever, but less literature. We have more education than ever, but less common sense. We have more relationships than ever, but less love. More transparency than ever, but less trust.Read more »
Mississippi has instituted a series of unreasonable regulations for doctors who perform abortions. Using a practice very similar to the kind of bottlenecking that was done to suppress black votes during the Jim Crow era, Mississippi has systematically squeezed the number of abortion clinics in the state down to just one. Anderson Cooper has, at long last, publicly said he is gay. Cooper made the announcement in an email to writer Andrew Sullivan. "The fact is, I'm gay, always have been, always will be, and I couldn’t be any more happy, comfortable with myself, and proud," he wrote. Cooper's sexuality has long been the subject of ample media speculation, but he has never publicly confirmed it -- a fact which he also seemed to address in the email to Sullivan. Cooper also said that he ultimately decided that he was doing more harm than good by not speaking up.Read more »
In 2007, Donald Bogardus contracted HIV from his long-term partner. When he later had unprotected sex with a man who didn't know Bogardus was HIV positive, he was charged under an Iowa law that criminalizes the transmission of HIV. "I wanted to tell him," Bogardus told the Daily Iowan, "but when I went to say it, I clammed up…I was afraid he was going to blab it out to everybody." Now Bogardus—a church-going, nursing-home worker with cerebral palsy and a pet goldfish named Survivor—faces 25 years in prison and lifelong sex offender status.Read more »
