Is the free market an individualist or collectivist social arrangement? Don’t answer too quickly. It’s a trick question. Most people — free-market friend and free-market foe alike — will answer “individualist.” And that makes perfect sense. The free market describes a political/legal environment in which individuals are at liberty to engage in any peaceful activity, with only force and fraud prohibited. No one may aggressively interfere with another human being’s peaceful projects.Read more »
When the pilgrims first came to America they almost all starved to death because they adopted communal agriculture. How the pilgrims saved themselves was to adopt the primary prerequisite for a capitalism economy, private property. Mayflower pilgrims had a system in which all goods were owned by the community. On the ever-popular website, Reddit, I found this comic, which happens to be posted in /r/socialism. One of their redditors thought they'd post it in /r/libertarianism to "...watch the shitstorm...".

Russian scientists are falling victim to their own antiquated notions of socialized, government-run science as Moscow demands that all its science arms be further unified under new rules and authority. It's amazing to see the double-think from the scientists as they try to explain government sponsorship of science as a good thing, but in the same breath explain away further centralization and new government mandates as a bad thing. From a libertarian perspective, this reads almost like an article from The Onion.Read more »
LIMA (AFP) – The city of Lima plans to declare the Peruvian capital a "GMO-free zone" after a controversial government decree that critics fear will see the country flooded with genetically modified organisms.
Several municipalities in addition to Lima -- a city of more than eight million inhabitants -- as well as agricultural groups, agronomists and doctors have denounced the decree, which was published earlier this month.
Deputy Mayor Eduardo Zegarra said he hopes the GMO-free ordinance will be approved "as quickly as possible" by Lima's new socialist administration.Read more »
