John Edwards walks free after chaotic end to corruption trial

John Edwards, the former vice-presidential candidate who wrecked his political career with an extramarital affair, walked free from court on Thursday after a chaotic end to a month-long trial for using campaign funds to cover up his infidelity. After nine days of deliberations, the jury was only able to reach a verdict on one count, declaring him not guilty of accepting illegal campaign contributions from supporter Rachel "Bunny" Mellon in 2008. The judge declared a mistrial on the other five counts.

Torture By Sesame Street At Guantanamo Bay

In 2008, reports surfaced that detainees at Guantanamo Bay had been tortured by songs such as Metallica's "Enter Sandman" and Drowning Pool's "Bodies." Now, a new documentary from Al Jazeera shows that detainees may also have been subjected to musical torture of a softer variety. According to the report, prisoners at the U.S. detention camp at Guantanamo Bay Naval Base were forced to wear headphones blasting music from Sesame Street on repeat for hours or days on end. Christopher Cerf, the award-winning composer of Sesame Street, was stunned to learn how his music was being exploited.

WASHINGTON -- In early 2009, El Paso Rep. Sylvestre Reyes (D) warned city council members that, if they approved a resolution calling for a debate on marijuana legalization, the city would jeopardize its federal funding. Instead, what turned out to be at risk was Reyes' seat in the House of Representatives in 2012. On Tuesday night, El Paso voters ousted Reyes in a Democratic primary, in favor of the council member who had pushed the 2009 legalization resolution, Beto O'Rourke.

Governments Around The World Expel Syrian Diplomats After Massacre

PARIS -- Governments around the world expelled Syrian ambassadors and diplomats Tuesday, an unusual, coordinated blow to Syrian President Bashar Assad's regime following a gruesome massacre that the United Nations said involved close-range shootings of scores of children and parents in their homes. The United States, Britain, Canada, Australia, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Bulgaria and the Netherlands took action Tuesday against Syrian diplomats. Britain's foreign secretary said the countries involved in Tuesday's expulsions would also push for tougher sanctions against Syria.
