Last week, a pet Newfoundland in Des Moines, Wash., was shot four times — yes, four times — by a police officer who had tried and failed to wrangle the 115-pound dog, who had gotten out of her yard. Her name was Rosie. She was 2. She joins Gloria, the arthritic, 11-year-old yellow Lab police shot to death in her own backyard last month in Oakland, Calif.
