The Man Who Quit Money

Posted May 5th, 2012 by pmfalcon

Daniel Suelo hasn't made a penny in 12 years. He hasn't spent a penny either. He is the subject of the book "The Man Who Quit Money," by Mark Sundeen. In 2000, Suelo had $30 to his name. He left the money in a phone booth and never looked back. Since then, Suelo has lived on public lands, foraging in dumpsters and canyons for food. He welcomes the generosity of others. He doesn't pay taxes. Doesn't accept any form of government welfare. And appears relatively happy. "He is not suggesting or encouraging that anyone else live like him," Sundeen told Brown. For Suelo, it is a spiritual journey.

I like this guy.

Leave the dude alone. He wasn't saying that anyone else should do what he is doing. I'm a little envious that one guy has figured a way to keep the government out of his pockets. Long live Daniel Suelo!

This story is not about liberty

I like this guy too, but what I am trying to say is Suelo's form of anarcho-primitivism/anarcho-poverty is interesting but not practical. Hence why 1000's of people arent doing this already.

I would challenge everyone to try this experiment for one week only.

I guarantee you will not like it. Sure you may "stick it to the man" by not paying taxes for one week, but at what price?

You will suffer an unbearable loss of liberty and elimination of freedom of choice that a combination of "work and spendable" currency brings.

Your existence would become that of essentially a pond duck or seagull. Your days would consist of mainly foraging for berries and carcasses, sleeping in natural elements and depending on handouts from the occasional human sympathizer.

Like I said this story is interesting, but anarcho-poverty is not the way to achieve liberty and freedom.

A better approach is homesteading an off grid farm or those without money find cooperation within an Ecovillage.

Daniel Suelo may have found his liberty in this method, but 99% of others will not, just being honest. Don't believe me? Go try it for one week and find out!! lol

This guy is rejecting more than money - hes rejecting sanity

Money is merely a tool to transfer energy, its not inherently evil.

Even Jesus himself used money and believed strongly enough in gold and silver to teach a parable how it should be used and invested wisely (Matthew 25:14-30). Judas carried the silver that belonged to Jesus and the disciples in a bag.

If this guy doesnt believe in using Bernankes paper with art on it, he could at least trade with silver or bitcoins while still choosing to live modestly in the desert.
