In Orange County, California, the city is suing a couple who replaced their front lawn with wood chips to save water. Article includes great quotes like:
“Compliance -- that’s all we’ve ever wanted,” explained City Atty. Wayne Winthers.
“It’s just funny that we pay our taxes to the city and the city is now prosecuting us with our own money,” Quan Ha said.
Don’t mess with your neighbor’s lawn — especially if that neighbor is the city of Columbus. Property owners along Columbus’ three reservoirs — Griggs, O’Shaughnessy and Hoover — are being taken to court for mowing, weeding and otherwise sprucing up waterfront property owned by the city that abuts their backyards.
This is from 2008, but still relevant. Small town in Mississippi gets a $845,000 grant from the Feds to build an AMTRAK station. The town is a flag stop, so the train doesn't even stop there regularly, and AMTRAK provides no services at the station. It is basically just a nearly $1 million dollar rain shelter. Insane.....the free market would never waste money like this.
