Google withdraws from China after hacker attacks

Posted January 13th, 2010 by gothbarbie

Google is reconsidering its involvement in China after suspicions hacker attacks from Chinese authorities:

"These attacks and the surveillance they have uncovered--combined with the attempts over the past year to further limit free speech on the web--have led us to conclude that we should review the feasibility of our business operations in China. We have decided we are no longer willing to continue censoring our results on, and so over the next few weeks we will be discussing with the Chinese government the basis on which we could operate an unfiltered search engine within the law, if at all. We recognize that this may well mean having to shut down, and potentially our offices in China."

It is o sad to know that there are hackers who wanted to pull off Google. But you know what? Despite this bad news, I am so glad that they have a new tool for the users. I am talking about the new Google Buzz. I guess you’ve heard it. It allows users to share their status updates, images and videos. Looks like Google is serious of becoming the next Facebook, though, Facebook is the first popular social networking site. Google just acquired Aardvark, a company that developed a social networking search program.

Lots of hoopla, little substance.

What I find most amazing are the people who are "so upset" that Google would filter their content. "Don't be evil" and yet filter results? Hypocrites! No, not really. They abide the law. The laws of France require no Nazi memorabilia, like medals, helmets, flags. China require no Falon Gong or Tienamin Square stuff. Who is to say that the US Fed.Gov, using their Patriot Act secret orders, aren't having particular places fudged a bit in Google Earth, or results for "nuclear weapons designs" or "explosive recipe" censored? Who can say that those proprietary search patterns Google collects and nurtures won't, or haven't, been subpoenaed under those same very legal very secret orders? Any actual principle will be violated while trying to follow the law, because the law is not based upon any principle other than "Because We Say So."

Then don't follow the law

As far as I'm concerned, its just as bad when states censor Internet no matter if it takes place in Europe, China or the US. The fact that the (Chinese) state in this case hack private companies to surveillance private communications in order to hunt down freedom activists is despicable.

"Just as bad"?

Google has a very high profile. Such a company doesn't stay in business long by not abiding the laws. I, too, would like civil disobedience to be the rule rather than the exception. Sorry, that's not reality. The most Google can do is cease Chinese operations, and that is what they are talking about doing. What other company had the balls even do to THAT?
